A
theater with history
Because of its geographical location, among the rich mining
lands and states? capital, Queretaro has been an important site in Mexico?s
history, especially during the Revolution and Independence conception.
Such is the case of the Republic?s Theater, inaugurated in 1852
under the name Iturbide Theater, in honor of the self proclaimed emperor. Not
only has it served as an artistic stage, but in 1867 the trial against
Maximiliano de Habsburgo took place here. As part of the celebration for our
100 Years of the Revolution, this theater was also witness to heated arguments
from the Constituent Congress from November 1916 to February 5th,1917 when the
Magna Carta, which Mexicans are still governed by, was issued. This was
President Venustiano Carranza?s most important act.
In 1922, the Governer of Queretaro, José María Trucuelo,
declared the name be changed to Republic?s Theater, which today is Queretaro?s
Filharmonic Orchestra?s headquarters. Every February 5th a Constitution
remembrance event takes place. It is located between the streets of Juarez and
Angela Peralta. Visiting schedule starts
at 09:00 a.m. ? 5:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday. Once you?re there, at the exit, you can visit
the restaurant, Casona de los Cinco Patios, another witness to many stories
because, among its guests were Maximiliano and Porfirio Diaz. Its "antojería"
has a great menu. It is located in number 39 of the andador Cinco de Mayo.
