Emilio Pacheco awarded in Spain
Queen Sofia awarded the Mexican writer Jose Emilio Pacheco with
the Iberoamerican Poetry Prize on Tuesday November 17 in the Royal Palace in
Madrid.
José Emilio Pacheco, poet, essayist, translator, novelist and
short story writer, belongs to the generation of the fifties, which includes
Carlos Monsivais, Eduardo Lizalde, Sergio Pitol, Juan Vicente Melo, Alex Cox,
Juan Garcia Ponce, Sergio Galindo and Salvador Elizondo. Throughout his career
Pacheco has been awarded prizes such as the Jose Donoso (2001), Octavio Paz
(2003), Pablo Neruda (2004), Ramón López Velarde (2003), Alfonso Reyes (2003),
Jose Asuncion Silva (1996), Xavier Villaurrutia (1973) and Garcia Lorca (2005),
among others.
During the event, the work titled "Contraelegía" was
presented which includes three unpublished personal photographs of the author,
some unpublished work, and manuscripts that demonstrate how he makes his texts.
This award is endowed with 42,100 euros and aims to recognize
all the work of a living author for their literary value that represents a
significant contribution to the common cultural heritage of Latin America and
Spain.
