Morelia to
extend their cultural heritage
Morelia?s municipal government
signed a contract with "Morelia World Heritage" civil association so that
researchers from the UNAM can begin investigating the city?s historical center
in order to prove the existence of underground tunnels.
Roberto Monroy García, Minister
of Tourism for this region, pointed out that this study represents an
opportunity to discover and use the tunnels as a tourist attraction for the
capital, which is considered as World Heritage.
On his behalf, the research
coordinator Rene Chavez Andres Tejero from UNAM?s geophysical department,
believes the tunnels might have been found during the 1970?s under what is
actually used as a Rec Center.
He also detailed that they will
be performing a GPR (land penetration radar) and for this, will be using the
galvanic and capacitative methods for geophysical observation equipment. The
expert also pointed out that they had previously found two land anomalies at an
approximate two meter depth in the Cathedral, and will proceed as mentioned
beforehand to confirm if in fact, there are underground tunnels in that area as
well.
Work will start on November
26th and will last for two months, so it is expected that results will be in by
February 2010.
