Dead in the Huasteca potosina

From October 31st to November 2nd, the Huasteca Potosina will become the ideal stage for old souls to hang around freely as people who live in this are believe that during this time their dearly departed come back to visit them.

Almost a week in advance, families are preparing for "All Hollows Eve", getting their shrines ready with offerings such as the departed?s favorite drinks and meals in life.

That is how the homes entryways are decorated with colorful petals belonging to xempasuchil flowers, framed by candles that illuminate the souls to their gifts on the nights of October 31st to November 2nd.

It is believed that on the last day of October, the first visitors are the souls of children. On November 1st, the second night, a wake and rememberance is made for the tired and unbaptised souls. The Tenek indigenous group members play the "Malinche Dance" which they dedicate to the dead.

Finally, "La Catrina" (a skeleton representing death) enjoys the celebration that takes place in the cemetry on November 2nd, the Beloved Departed?s Day. Tenek and Nahuatl communities decorate the graves and usually have a family dinner there, and create a festive environment for the living and dead. To see their dead off, the shrine is redecorated on November 30th.
